Arranged Schedule for College Students, Why Not?
Programming
the schedule of courses is likely a terrible time for most college students in
State University of Malang. It is the time where students are competing to get
in the expected courses with desired schedule arrangement and lecturers.
Students generally have the same opinion about ideal lecturers, so classes with
ideal lecturers will be fully booked
as soon as the applying time opened. For some reasons, I do not agree and
comfortable with this system. With some considerations, I think it should be better
if students get their course schedule arranged by the system without
programming it themselves.
It might be true that course
self-programming can make students more independent and responsible for their
own choices. They are involved in every step of course-programming so they know
how to deal with that kind of rigmarole. However, although the students would
be more independent, course self-programming is quite time-consuming. In a
little research I have conducted by interviewing, students who programmed their
schedule out of Malang City found it easier than those who programmed it in a
range of Malang City. For those who found difficulties, they always have to
face “Java script error” or “This service has been busy. Try again later.” In
consequences, since they do not want to get unfavourite classes and lecturers,
they are always keep trying to reload the page – which is clearly showing
refusal – that takes a considerably long time to succeed. In my own experience,
I have to wait from 10 AM to 5 PM to finish applying only for one course. This
self-programming system will make the unlucky be unlucky for good, plus
suffering on the wasted time in vain.
Many students also use the “I won’t
get a good grade if I’m with this lecturer” as an excuse to choose out of their
own offering. Based on human instinct, it is absolutely true if everyone wants
to attend courses of their favourite lecturers, avoid the horrendous ones,
choose preferable time, and go in the same classes with their closest friends.
Nonetheless, these kinds of excuses are not suitable for college students which
have had considered as mature. Mature people should remember that every cloud
has a silver lining, which means taking all the positivity and get rid of the
negativity ones. Choosing our courses out of our own offering means a lot for
the lecturers. They might find difficulties in planning make-up classes, since
students in the class come from different offering and have different schedule
as well. In recent years, course crash becomes an enormous problem for both
students and lecturers. They were oftenly failed to set make-up classes and
ended up at online assignment, which was considered unsatisfying for some
students. Since demolishing our ego seems impossible for all students, programmed-courses
by system is the best way out to establish justify and fairness. Students might
suffer with scary lecturers this semester, but they will not again next
semester. I am quite sure that the system can arrange the lecturer division
fairly for there is no a group of students who get a kind lecturer throughout
college years and a bunch of unfortunate students who get terrifying lecturers
until they graduate, if they are going to.
Choosing our own courses and
applying to many different classes with different students let us have
wide-range friendship and connection. We can be friend with people all around
the department, and everyone knows us. However, for some students who do not
care about popularity and the number of friends they have, that sort of situation
would not be necessary. In some cases,
they even feel uncomfortable for having many friends in quantity yet low in
quality. They prefer hanging out with friends they know well and used to be
with. From the observation I have done, most students who get along together
stated that they have been friend since the first semester. It means that they
have got their chemistry although in later semester they are separated into
different classes. Most of them are comfortable with their old friends.
All in all, course programming which
arranged by system is a way better than students grabbing their favourite
classes by their own and dumping other students with not-powerful-enough
internet connection to participate in course programming battle. I believe that
course programming system in State University of Malang should be changed for
everyone’s sake, instead of restraining some group of students’ ego.
